Dragon’s Eye once again present us with a challenging audio visual collection in the form of a collaboration between Wyndel Hunt and digital media artist Thom Heilson. This intriguing series of works sees the two combining forces on a DVD, with a separate soundtrack CD by Hunt also included .This organic collaboration, as in so many instances of this kind of music, sprang out of a shared aesthetic language, and the desire to see two distinctly separate disciplines becoming one singular hybrid unit.

This fusion of creative energies works particularly well on the DVD, with Heilson’s intricately woven textural abstractions bolstering Hunt’s clean, angular surfaces. Heilson’s imagery flickers between pure fields of shimmering colour, to half imagined industrial landscapes, that pulse and flutter in time with the soundtracks. Hunt’s soundscapes, meanwhile deploy clean and precise tonalism, at times sounding almost orchestral, tracts that fizz and spark, leaving shimmering ambient vapour trails that then explode into life with mechanistic , undulating bursts of activity that bootstrap into existence. This is an exciting and refreshing foray, and sees Dragon’s Eye taking a brave step forward into a similar territory explored by the UK’s ONEDOTZERO DVD experimental forays. DVD soundtrack pieces are inexplicably notoriously difficult to market, so it is a wily move on the part of the label to include a CD in with this package alongside it’s audio visual counterpart. I can wholeheartedly recommend that those with a tendency towards full-on immersive environments give this collection their utmost attention, as we have here a collaboration that will no doubt continue, and evolve into something very special indeed.
